Dental decay in some form is something almost everyone will experience in their lifetime. Some are blessed with amazing genes that allow them to go most of their lives without too much dental trouble, while others must maintain above-average dental hygiene just to keep cavities from forming.

No matter what stage of dental decay you are experiencing, your Rigby dentist at Cedar Creek Dental can help.

rigby dentalLike almost all dental problems, the main culprit in dental decay is plaque. It results from a combination of bacteria that naturally lives in your mouth with carbohydrates from the food that you eat. The bacteria in plaque feeds mainly on carbohydrates.

The Dental Decay Process

  • Demineralization: This is the stage at which plaque begins eating away at the enamel – the protective outer layer of the tooth. The enamel can be naturally replaced through better dental hygiene and improved diet.
  • Cavity Formation: This is the stage at which plaque has eaten away a hole in the dentin, the second layer of the tooth. The dentin can’t be naturally replaced. Our Rigby dentist can provide a white fillings to solve the problem.
  • Pulpitis: The tooth pulp, as the name implies, is the soft fleshy tissue at the center of the tooth. It is mainly comprised of blood vessels and the tooth nerve. Plaque can eventually begin to infect the tooth pulp, leading to inflammation and swelling. This puts pressure on the tooth nerve resulting in the cutting off of blood supply to the nerve, as well as a lot of pain. At this stage, your Rigby dentist can perform a root canal.
  • Abscess: Over time, an inflamed pocket of pus will form, usually near the gum line. It usually resembles a pimple. It is important that the abscess is drained before toxins work their way into the bloodstream. We can drain the abscess and perform a root canal at this stage.
